Ariadne & The Minotaur

Picture Book | Narrative Retelling | Reportage | Illustration

This picture book concept takes the myth of Theseus & the Minotaur and recasts Ariadne (sidelined, betrayed and disposable in the original) as the hero. The concept drew on the weaving heritage of my hometown, making reference to Ariadne's ball of thread in order to pull out a feminist subtext and an underlying personal mythology. In 2015 this work was selected to win the Worldwide Picture Book Illustration Competition, which was supported by the International Centre for the Picture Book in Society (UK), Lemniscaat (NL), Protea (SA), Walker Books (UK) and Boje Verlag (D).
