'Following a Phantom in my Mind...'

Research | Reportage | Animation | 3D | Illustration

This research project aimed to question the use of reportage within my practice as a narrative illustrator. This was achieved by undertaking an in-depth series of location drawing sessions at Witley Court, a local tourist site managed by The English Heritage.

The outcome, a short research presentation incorporating animated narrative sequences, seeks to illustrate and interrogate the function and relevance of various theoretical approaches within my work – in particular ruin theory, the picturesque, the gothic, the melodramatic and the gaze – which were made apparent psycho-geographically, through the experience of working on-site. The project also questions the role and purpose of heritage in contemporary culture, the role of narrative in constructions of the self, and the effect of cultural representations on our experience of place.
